As soon as that weapon would be revealed, bodies would be flooded with the instinct to defend oneself, shrinking the space between thoughts and actions. At least one of the two people-either the guard or the suspect-would probably be armed. If we were in the United States, this situation would have looked very different. No one took out their phones to film, no one made an effort to help, we were all just frozen, waiting to see how this real-life drama would pan out. We’re desensitized to it, but because we’re human, we’re still uncomfortable. We’ve seen these types of scenarios play out many times on social media, meditated through the safety of our screens. The scene in front of them was distressing, but also not unfamiliar. Everyone stood like statues, disheveled hangers drooped over their arms, with slack-jawed expressions no different than how you would imagine their faces look while watching T.V. It was too intense a situation to look away, but we also weren’t doing anything.

What struck me most about this situation was not the stern guard or the distressed man, but all of us bystanders. The guard told him to leave (a confusing statement given he was pushing him to the ground). “Com’on man, THIS IS MY STUFF,” the man screamed, tears streaming down his face. The man refused to let go and was being dragged by the force of the guard, who was totally unfazed by the man’s distress. As they each pulled, the zipper ripped open and clothes spilled out onto the floor. I turned around to see the security guard and a man in a tug-of-war with his backpack.

When I entered, I immediately noticed a security guard at the front door.
